In Vienna and Lower Austria, prices for gas and electricity will rise as early as September 1.
Vienna. This bringing forward the annual adjustment by three months by the Energy Alliance now calls the Caritas president on the plan. On Twitter, Michael Landau demands, because of the accelerated pace of inflation, that the government also react more quickly with its aid. “If index adjustments, i.e., price increases for electricity and gas, are now brought forward, then index adjustments, increases in social benefits, minimum pensions, etc., must also be brought forward. That has to be coupled,” Landau said.
Not only that, one-time payments won’t be enough, Landau said: “Inflation doesn’t just hit once, it hits with every bill – at the supermarket, with every rent and every fee.”
Heating season. The government plans to present a model for an electricity price cap by the end of August; this measure will take effect with “the heating season” – probably around October.
Price hammer for electricity. However, electricity and gas prices in the eastern region (except Burgenland) are already rising in September. Specifically, the electricity price for a household customer with a consumption of 3,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month will increase by 57 euros (684 euros/year). At 2,000 kWh, it is still 36 euros (462 euros/year).
